The MAKEDEV executable is used to create device files, often in /dev.
Device files are special files through which applications can interact
with hardware.
This package is not necessary for most modern Linux systems, where the udev
subsystem provides a more dynamic mechanism for device file management.

Changelog

2013-05-18 - Steve Langasek <steve.langasek@ubuntu.com>
makedev (2.3.1-93ubuntu1) saucy; urgency=low
* Merge from Debian unstable, remaining changes:
- Remove the udev handling; we actually deliberately invoke MAKEDEV on
udev-managed directories to make the basic devices now.
* Dropped changes, included in Debian:
- Mark makedev as Multi-Arch: foreign to allow for mountall
to be installable with multi-arch (needed for armhf containers on x86)
- debian/preinst: don't call update-rc.d remove on initial installation
of the package.
2013-05-09 - Colin Watson <cjwatson@debian.org>
makedev (2.3.1-93) unstable; urgency=low
* QA upload.
* Mark makedev as Multi-Arch: foreign to allow for mountall to be
installable with multi-arch (needed for armhf containers on x86; thanks,
Stéphane Graber).
* Remove preinst script, which had a buggy version comparison and in any
case only applied to upgrades from lenny (thanks, Steve Langasek;
closes: #674218).

makedev (2.3.1-92ubuntu1) raring; urgency=low
* Merge from Debian unstable, remaining changes:
- Mark makedev as Multi-Arch: foreign to allow for mountall
to be installable with multi-arch (needed for armhf containers on x86)
- Remove the udev handling; we actually deliberately invoke MAKEDEV on
udev-managed directories to make the basic devices now.
- debian/preinst: don't call update-rc.d remove on initial installation
of the package.
2012-09-09 - gregor herrmann <gregoa@debian.org>
makedev (2.3.1-92) unstable; urgency=low
* QA upload.
* Fix "postinst fails on non-default Debian kernels and is
useless on =< 3.4":
drop check for kernel version >= 2.4
(Closes: #685376)
* Fix "/run transition: Please update use of /dev/.udev":
additionally check for /run/udev, patch from Roger Leigh
(release goal).
(Closes: #644318)
2012-05-23 - Steve Langasek <steve.langasek@ubuntu.com>
makedev (2.3.1-91ubuntu2) quantal; urgency=low
* debian/preinst: don't call update-rc.d remove on initial installation of
the package; this is unnecessary, and causes problems for bootstrap
because insserv is deliberately unavailable. LP: #1001460.
2012-05-03 - Stéphane Graber <stgraber@ubuntu.com>

2012-03-21 - Bdale Garbee <bdale@gag.com>
makedev (2.3.1-90) unstable; urgency=low
* finish orphaning package by changing maintainer to Debian QA Group
* add Vcs entries to the control file
